This is useful for example when streaming game play by streaming directly to YouTube, Twitch, etc. There is also OBS Studio (and others) that can watch a part of the screen and capture that, turning it into a video feed. The application thinks its just using a different video camera. This allows, for example, the output of CamTwist to be fed into the camera for Google Meet, Skype, etc. They can create a virtual camera for other applications to use as an input video stream. Similarly there are programs that can do this with video, such as CamTwist on the Mac. The second application then selects a Microphone called BlackHole from which it gets the audio stream.) You select that and the audio output goes to BlackHole. (BlackHole etc appears alongside speakers and headphones as the output device.

BlackHole and Soundflower are example applications on Mac that can connect the audio output of one program to the microphone of another, if you can tell the application to use different вЂњspeakersвЂќ. There are some 3rd party utilities around that make this possible, such as вЂњVirtual CableвЂќ. That is, on Mac and WIndows you cannot just hook the audio/video output of program 1 to the input of program 2. It may be obvious to most, but it took me a moment to realize that applications can read from the microphone or camera, and can send output to the speakers or screen, but that does not mean you can do a UNIX pipe command between them. There are lots of interesting things you can do, but they donвЂ™t always all work together as you plan. It was interesting to see how the complexity can blow out pretty quickly. In this post I focus on some of the underlying technologies.

Thanks to Swizec Teller, who first put me on the track of this workaround.In my last post I talked about some of the decision process I used when exploring which video platform to use a series of online office hours for ecommerce. In any case, itвЂ™s easier than the EOS Utility hack and all you need for hardware is a micro-USB cable. For instance, I didnвЂ™t need to focus and then turn off the physical AutoFocus switch on my lens, which you have to do with the EOS Utility hack. I didnвЂ™t need quite as elaborate a setup with this. That means you may need to turn off autofocus, turn off the info display (hit the INFO button as many times as needed) and otherwise set your camera up properly. I deactivated auto-power-off, so you may need to do that too.Д¬amera Live gets the same images that would show up on your LED during Live View. Or CamTwist will make that video feed look and act like a webcam, so you can record with QuickTime or ScreenFlow or whatever you like.Д«ut more importantly, Camera Live keeps the camera active! No recording limit. CamTwist and OBS can both use a Syphon video source.

On the plus side, theyвЂ™re free! On the minus side, theyвЂ™re a little clunky.Д¬amera Live exports a Mac-specific protocol called Syphon. IвЂ™ve found one setup that works well for my 250d - Camera Live with OBS or CamTwist. You can use multiple cameras in under-30-minute sections. There are also hacks of desperation - you can record in under-30-minute sections and edit it back together.

You can install MagicLantern on most Canon EOS DSLRs to get around it - and MagicLantern does not work yet for the 250d (as of March 2020.) ThereвЂ™s a hack using the Canon EOS Utility for the 200d - and that hack does not work on the 250d. Every DSLR has a recording limit of 30 minutes or less, but there are clever workarounds for many of them. Specifically, itвЂ™s been really hard to handle the 30-minute recording limit when I want to record a long talk or use it as a webcam. (NOTE: I HAVE A SOLUTION BUT ITвЂ™S MAC-ONLY.) If you own one, you may have the same problem.

I recently purchased a Canon EOS 250d (also sold as the Canon Rebel Sе…ѓ.) I thought, вЂњhey, the 200d has been around forever, it probably wonвЂ™t be hard to get it working for video streaming and recording my talks.вЂќ
